Most consumers are not familiar with the difference between the different types of leather and are not aware of what italian leather and aniline leather is.

    What is italian leather?

Italian leather is a term used for leather dyed on both sides, and contrary to aniline leather, coated for protection. The advantage with italian leather is, that it is robust, very durable and easy to maintain. This makes italian leather the primary choice for all kinds of furniture and also for office and institutional use. Italian leather can be soft and comfortable, but the feel and comfort will never be quite the same as with aniline leather.

    What is aniline leather?

Aniline leather is characterised by a very comfortable touch and feel and its natural surface. Aniline leather are made from rawhide of very high quality. The hides are dyed with colors that will permeate the entire hide. There isn't used any surface pigmented colors or coating for protection. Since aniline leather doesn't use a surface color there will be minor color variations on the surface. The lack of a protective coation also makes this leather more receptive to stains and fading.

Aniline leather generally has a softer and nicer feel to it than fx. semi-aniline leather which has a coating. The leather can still breath and this greatly adds to the comfort and exclusivity of this leather.

It is important that you understand the difference between italian and aniline leather quality. One type of leather is not always better than the other. Both types of leather has its advantages. When choosing leather type, you should take lifestyle and use of the furniture into consideration. Generally speaking, softness and durability are opposites - aniline is the softest and most comfortable product, but is receptive to scratches and fading. Italian leather quality has a harder and firmer surface due to its coating and treatment, so these hides are easier to maintain, but will not feel as exclusive.
